Oden: Offline Voice Typing
Oden turns your speech into text entirely on your phone. It has no account, no ads, no analytics and no server of its own. We do not collect, store or share any personal data.
Your voice and your text
Audio is recorded only while you are dictating. It is transcribed on the device by a speech model running locally, and the recording is discarded afterwards. Neither the audio nor the text is ever sent off the phone.
Your dictation history is saved in the app's private storage on your phone so you can find earlier transcripts. You can clear it in the app, and it is deleted when you uninstall Oden.
Accessibility service
Oden uses Android's accessibility service for one purpose: to show the microphone button when a text field is focused, and to type your dictated text into that field at the cursor. To do that it looks at which field is focused and what that field currently contains, so the new text lands in the right place. This information is used only at that moment, on the device. It is not stored, logged or transmitted. The transcript is also placed on the clipboard so you can paste it if the app you are typing in does not accept inserted text.
Internet use
Oden uses the internet to download the speech recognition models you choose, from Hugging Face (huggingface.co). These are plain file downloads. Oden sends no audio, text, identifiers or usage data with them. Hugging Face, like any web server, receives the technical information needed to deliver a file, such as your IP address; see Hugging Face's privacy policy.
Oden is free for 20 dictations a day; a one-time in-app purchase removes the limit. The purchase is made and checked through Google Play Billing. Oden only asks Google Play whether the unlock was bought; it receives no payment details. Google's handling of the purchase is covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
Permissions
- Microphone – to record what you dictate.
- Notifications and foreground service – to keep transcription running while you dictate, as Android requires.
- Accessibility – to place the text in the field you are typing in, as described above.
- Internet – to download speech models and to check the unlock with Google Play.
Children
Oden is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
